John Vose - Scholar, Educator. Author
Family connection - great-great grandfather of Edward Elihu Hazen, Jr.
John Vose was born on July 10, 1766 in Bedford, New Hampshire, the son of Samuel Vose and Phoebe Vickery. He married Lydia Webster on February 24, 1800 in Atkinson, New Hampshire. They were the parents of six daughters.
An article referencing his life and work was published in the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine in the March 1917 Issue. Here's a link : https://archive.dartmouthalumnimagazine.com/article/1917/3/1/john-vose-1795 .
John Vose was a graduate of Dartmouth College class of 1795 (more on that later), and spent about 35 years of his life as teacher and then principal at the Pembroke Academy in New Hampshire. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and at least one of his speeches to that society is listed in the holdings of the State Library of Pennsylvania. He retired from teaching around 1830, and became a farmer and surveyor.
During his teaching years, he wrote a book entitled "A System of Astronomy" while teaching at the Pembroke Academy. It is thought to be be the first American textbook using the theories of Copernicus. And yes, one can purchase a facsimile copy of that book today from several on-line booksellers, as it is considered a work of historical importance in the field of science education.
In researching this post, I found a modern review of his book - the reviewer compared Vose's calculated predictions of astronomical events in his textbook to a modern astronomer's work, and found that all of Vose's predictions were either correct to the day or one day early.
After his retirement from Pembroke, John Vose learned to graft fruit trees, and introduced the techniques to his town. At the time the alumni article was written in 1917, the author indicated that some of Vose's grafted trees were still bearing fruit.
A personal anecdote - Edward Elihu Hazen, Jr. found John Vose's Dartmouth College diploma among the family papers and returned it to Dartmouth College.
John Vose died on April 3, 1840 in Atkinson, New Hampshire, and was buried in the Atkinson Cemetery.
John Vose > Martha Vose > John Vose Hazen > Edward Elihu Hazen > Edward Elihu Hazen Jr.
