In 1604, he enrolled in Queen's College, Cambridge, then transferred to Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He received a Bachelor of Arts in 1608 and a Master of Arts in 1611. From 1609 to 1619 he was a Fellow at Emmanuel College.  In 1620 he became rector of St. George's Church, Surrey. In 1621, he married Susannah Garbrand in Surrey. John Andrews - Pequot War Veteran and Tax Rebel Family Connection - 8th great-grandfather of Roy Ellsworth Stricker John Andrews was born in about 1621 in England. He immigrated to Massachusetts in about 1636 and settled in the town of Ipswich. It has been suggested that he was a servant to John and Sarah Dillingham of Ipswich when he first arrived.  John served in the Pequot War in 1637. For his service, he was granted an eight acre lot in the part of Ipswich known as Chebacco. He was a carpenter and yeoman by trade. Sometime around 1645 he married Jane Jordan, daughter of Stephen Jordan of Ipswich. What is a Freeman?  After using the term "made a Freeman" in many, many, blog posts, it's time to explain what the requirements were to become a Freeman in Massachusetts in the 1600's.  To Become a Freeman in Massachusetts in the 1600's, a specific set of requirements and conditions had to be met.  1. Be male 2. Be 21 years old or older 3. Not be a bonded slave or indentured servant 4. Own property 5. Be a Church Member of the established church 6. Swear an oath of fidelity to the English Crown 7. Swear the Freeman's Oath                                         Some notes: Many young men paid for their passage to Massachusetts by indenturing themselves to someone already there.
