Hazen Family Tree - Roger Clap, reposted with new information added

Roger Clap - Soldier, Captain at Castle Island Family Connection - 7th great-grandfather of Edward Elihu Hazen, Jr.  Note: This is a revision of a previous post. I discovered some more information about Roger and decided to repost with updates. The new information is in italics.  Roger Clap was born on April 12, 1609 in Sallcom, Devonshire, England. We know a lot about him, since he wrote his memoirs.  When he was twenty or twenty-one, a Puritan minister from forty miles away from the Clap home asked Roger's father if he could come talk to Roger. The minister was Rev. John Maverick, and he was recruiting young men to relocate to the Massachusetts colony. After the talk, Roger agreed to go, with his father asking Rev. Maverick to look after him.  Rev. Maverick and his new parishioners left Plymouth, England on March 20, 1630, on the ship Mary and John, which arrived at Nantasket on May 30, 1630. They came ashore and began to build the town of Dorchester. They bu...

Stricker Family Tree - Thomas Gunn, Innkeeper

Thomas Gunn, Innkeeper 9th Great-grandfather of Roy Ellsworth Stricker Founders of Windsor Memorial - Includes Thomas Gunn Thomas Gunn was born in England (possibly Devon) sometime around 1605. He came to Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1634. He was part of the same group of settlers from Dorchester as Matthew Grant, profiled in last week's blog. In the Town of Windsor Land Inventory of December 1640, Thomas Gunn was listed with four parcels of land: a home lot with eleven acres, a meadow of six and a half acres, a parcel on the other side of the Green River measuring fifteen rods by three miles, and eleven and a quarter acres near Green Meadow. He continued to increase his land holdings in Windsor for many years.  Thomas Gunn was an innkeeper by trade, according to the Windsor Historical Society. In about 1638 he married Eliz...

Bradley Family Tree - Ensign Thomas French, Sr. - Tailor

Ensign Thomas French, Sr. - Tailor Family Connections - 10th Great-grandfather of Ruth Bradley Hazen           Note - Thomas French's sister Alice, who immigrated with him, is an 8th Great-grandmother of                         Edward Elihu Hazen, Jr.  Map of Early Ipswich Thomas French Sr. was born in November, 1608 and baptized on November 27, 1609 in Assington, Suffolk, England, to parents Thomas French and Susan Riddlesdale French.  ----Note: in early records, Thomas, born in 1608, is referred to as Thomas Sr., his son as Thomas Jr.        Thomas Sr.'s father is also Thomas, born in 1584. The oldest Thomas immigrated to the colonies         after his son was already here, which causes much confusion in the records! Thomas French Sr. immigrated to Massachusetts in 1632 and settled in Boston. He was named Freeman on Nov. 6, 1632, and was the ...

Hazen Family Tree - Hollingsworth/Hunter/Jentilman, what a mess

This post will be a little different, so hang on. I planned to blog about Richard Hollingsworth, who immigrated with his wife and children in 1635. I thought he was the 9th great-grandfather of Edward Elihu Hazen, Jr. - descending through Hollingsworth's daughter Elizabeth.  Then I found a record that blew everything up.  This is from The Great Migration, a source I use frequently. That record looks simple, but who are all those kids, and why are they all listed with Hollingsworth when they have the last name Hunter?  Apparently, Susannah Hollingsworth, Richard's wife, was previously married to a man named  Thomas Hunter. They had several children - Christian, Elizabeth, Thomas, and William. Thomas Hunter died in about 1628, and Susannah then married Richard Hollingsworth. They had at least four children, William, Richard, Susan, and Elizabeth. So in 1635, Richard and Susannah immigrated to Salem, Massachusetts with eight children, including four from her previous ma...

Stricker Family Tree - Thomas Lombard, Innkeeper in Barnstable, Massachusetts

Thomas Lombard - Innkeeper in Barnstable, Massachusetts Family Connection - 10th Great-grandfather of Roy Ellsworth Stricker     Map of Current-day Barnstable Historic Map of Barnstable, about 100 years after Thomas Lombard's death Thomas Lombard was born in Thorncombe, Dorsetshire, England, in January 1581. The exact date of birth is unknown, but he was baptized on February 2, 1581. Little is known of his early life. He married four times, and had at least ten children. The names of his wives are the subject of discussion in the world of genealogy, but the fourth wife has been identified as Joyce (maiden name unknown) Wallen, widow of Ralph Wallen of Plymouth. Thomas and Joyce were married sometime around 1644.  Children by his first wife, who died between 1608 and 1617:               Thomas          b. 1602          d. before 1617             ...

Bradley Family Tree - Robert Allyn, Co-Founder of Norwich, Connecticut

Robert Allyn - Co-Founder of Norwich, Connecticut Family Connection - 10th Great-grandfather of Ruth Ann Bradley Original Settler Lots - Norwich, Connecticut Robert Allyn was born in 1608 in Dorset, England. He immigrated to Massachusetts in 1637 and settled in Salem. He became a member of the Church in Salem in 1642. The five-year gap is interesting, but there is no hard data to explain why he had to wait five years to become a church member. One possibility might be he paid for his passage by indenturing himself, and could only become a church member when that indenture was paid off. Note that in the colonies at this time, there was no separation of church and state, so if one was not a church member, he would be unable to vote or hold office in the town.  In 1638 Robert married Sarah Gager in Salem. They had at least five children:               Sarah         b. 1640          d. 1723  ...
