Hazen Family Tree - Bayley Hazen Military Road, Bayley Hazen Blue, and Moses Hazen

Bayley Hazen Military Road, Bayley Hazen Blue, and Moses Hazen Artist's Rendering of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham The first time I was asked if I was related somehow to Bayley Hazen Blue was about 20 years ago, at the Eastman Party Store in Midland, Michigan. I've been asked that several times since - so has Dave. We've also been asked about the connection to the Bayley Hazen Military Road in Vermont. So, here's a post about those two things plus the person who ties them together, Moses Hazen. First, Moses Hazen is not a direct ancestor of Edward Elihu Hazem, Jr. The first Edward Hazen, who immigrated to Rowley, Massachusetts in 1647, had four sons, John, Thomas, Edward, and Richard. Edward Elihu Hazen, Jr. is descended from Thomas, and Moses Hazen is descended from Richard.  Moses was born to parents Moses Hazen and Abigail White Hazen in Haverhill, Massachusetts on June 1, 1733. His military career began in 1756 as a Lieutenant in Capt. Edward Moore's Compa...

Stricker Family tree - Roger Williams, Part 2

Roger Williams, Part 2 Family Connection - 9th Great-grandfather of Roy Ellsworth Stricker Roger Williams Memorial, Prospect Park In the previous post, Roger Williams had been tried by the Massachusetts General Court in October 1635, convicted of sedition and heresy, and banished from the Colony. He spent the winter with the Native Americans until spring 1636.  In the spring of 1636, Williams and some of his followers began to build a settlement along the Seekonk River, near present-day Rumford, Rhode Island. However, the Plymouth Colony asserted that land was under their jurisdiction, so Williams could be re-arrested and sent back to Massachusetts for trial. So Williams and his companions abandoned their settlement, crossed the Seekonk River and built a new settlement they named Providence.  Roger Williams and his followers created Providence according to their "radical" ideals. First, they purchased their land from the Narraganset peoples. He gave up any special property or...

Stricker Family Tree - Roger Williams, Part 1, Reformer

Roger Williams Part 1, Reformer Family Connection - 9th Great-grandfather of Roy Ellsworth Stricker Roger Williams Statue, Roger Williams Park, Providence, Rhode Island Roger Williams was born to a middle-class family in the Smithfield District of London, around 1603. The Smithfield district was an area of London full of livestock markets, Dutch traders, the Newgate Prison, and the Smithfields Execution Site. James 1 was King, Protestantism (The Church of England) was the official religion of England, and non-conformers were often burned at the stake at the Smithfield Execution Site. Roger's date of birth is an estimate because his family's parish church, St. Sepulcher-without-Newgate, was partially burned during the Great Fire of London and the parish records were destroyed.  Young Roger Williams was mentored by Edward Coke, one of the most important legal minds in London. He sponsored Roger's enrollment at the Charterhouse School. Roger then attended Pembroke College at t...

Bradley Family Tree - Humphrey Barrett Sr. , Early Settler of Concord, MA

Humphrey Barrett Sr. - Patriarch of Barrett Family Family Connection - 9th and 8th Great-grandfather of Ruth Ann Hazen (yes, I'll explain this later) Early Map of Massachusetts Humphrey Barrett Sr. was born in Ashford, Kent, England in 1592. On March 4, 1613, he married Mary Hawes in England. In 1639 or 1640, they immigrated to Concord, Massachusetts with their three adult sons, Thomas, Humphrey Jr, and John.  Humphrey obtained about 300 acres of land in Concord, plus a "house lot" listed as Number 12, Monument St. If that is the same as today's Monument Square and the numbering system is the same, that means his house would have been where the Concord First Universalist Church is today. This is an informed conjecture - the next time I have an opportunity to visit the Concord Free Library, I will try to confirm this information.  Humphrey Barrett Sr. was declared a Freeman on May 6. 1657. He died on November 7, 1662. No record of his burial is available, but Barrett f...

Rosemeyer Family - What About Ellis Island?

What About Ellis Island?  We all learned about Ellis Island in School, so it is easy to assume that our family's immigrants came to the U.S. through it. But let's look at the data.... Of the eight immigrants in the Rosemeyer family tree, the latest to arrive was Eleanor Schakel, who came in 1891. Ellis Island didn't open until 1892, so that means none of the Rosemeyer/Harmening/Schakel/Beckman immigrants were processed there. So where did they come in to the U.S.? Friedrich Rosemeyer and Eleanore Kolling Rosemeyer immigrated in 1873, and came in through the port of New York. From 1855 until about 1890, immigrants arriving in New York were processed through Castle Garden in the Battery of Manhattan.  Castle Garden Christine Roepke immigrated in 1871 to New York, through Castle Garden. Eleanor Schakel immigrated in 1891, likely after the Immigration act of 1891 was passed. That act moved oversight for immigration from the states to the Federal Government. At that time, it was...

Hazen Family - Thomas Hazen Jr., Farmer

Thomas Hazen, Jr. - Farmer Family Connection - 5th Great-grandfather of Edward Elihu Hazen, Jr. Plains Cemetery, Franklin, New London, Connecticut Thomas Hazen Jr. was born to parents Thomas Hazen and Mary Howlett Hazen on February 2, 1690, in Boxford, Massachusetts. He was baptized in Topsfield, Massachusetts on May 4, 1690.  Thomas Jr. moved to Norwich, Connecticut in 1711 with his parents and siblings. On September 30, 1714, he married Sarah Ayer. His father Thomas Hazen Sr. gave him a ninety-acre farm on Pottapaug Hill in Norwich on March 13, 1716. He continued to increase his holdings there throughout his lifetime.  Thomas and Sarah had seven children:          Sarah          b. 1715     d. 1807          Joseph        b. 1717     d. 1796          Thomas     b. 1719     d. 1782          Alic...

Stricker Family Tree - John Miner, Revolutionary War Veteran

John Miner - Revolutionary War Veteran Family Connection - 4th Great-grandfather of Roy Ellsworth Stricker John Miner's Grave, North Royalton Cemetery North Royalton Ohio John Miner was born on January 27, 1761 in Lyme, Connecticut, to parents Ezekiel Miner and Margaret Beckwith Miner.  At fifteen, he enlisted in the Connecticut Regiment lead by Colonel John Chester. He served multiple times in multiple regiments from 1776 through 1781. The official records indicate the time periods when he served and sometimes include the officers he served under, but the location and purpose of the service is not specified. I've done my best to deduce where he was serving from the available historical record.  From his service records, it is likely that he was present at the Battle of Long Island in Nov. 1776.  From August 15, 1777 to September 17, 1777, he served in Captain Nathan Hine's Company, 13th Connecticut Militia under Col. Benjamin Hinman. He served from August 15, 1777 to Sep...
