Family Connection - Great-grandfather of Anna Elnora Rosemeyer
Henry W C Harmening > Henry William Harmening > Lillian Sophia Fanny Harmening > Anna Elnora Rosemeyer
Henry Wilhelm Christian Harmening was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 11, 1851 to William Harmening and Caroline Kuhlman. For more about his father, see the blog post dated September 19th.
In the 1860 Census, Henry is listed with his parents and siblings, with the location given as Indianapolis, Center Township, South Part. For those not familiar with Indianapolis, imagine the city as a three by three grid. Center Township would be the square in the center of that grid.
In the 1870 Census, Henry is 18, completed school, and is living at home, helping his father work the family farm.
In 1874, Henry married Christina Roepke.
Henry and his wife were residing in a home next door to his parents by 1880. They have two children, Henry, age 5, and Charles, age 4. Henry's occupation is listed as "huckster".
The 1890 Census records for Indiana (and most other states) were destroyed by fire, so the next record we have for Henry and his family in in 1900 at the address 1322 Wade Street. The household included Henry and Christina, their son Charles, their son Henry, his wife Anna (Beckman), and their infant daughter Marie. Henry is listed as a farmer, and his son Henry as farm laborer. Henry owned the farm and house without mortgages.
By 1910, the 1322 Wade Street property had been sold.. The Census lists Henry, Christina, and Charles living in the Beech Grove area of Indianapolis.
Henry Wilhelm Christian Harmening died of tuberculosis on Dec. 1, 1917. The funeral was held on Dec. 4 at Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church (now Zion Evangelical U.C.C.) in Indianapolis, with burial in Crown Hill Cemetery.
Note: In case you were wondering about the two middle names in the Harmening and Rosemeyer families, I was told by my great-aunt Freda Mary Lydia Harmening that the parents chose the child's first name, and the two middle names were the names of the godparents. Furthermore, it was the custom for boys to have two godfathers and girls to have two godmothers. So Henry's godfathers would have been named Wilhelm and Christian.
Henry Wilhelm Christian Rosemeyer is on the third ring from center, yellow area, right next to the blue quadrant.
