Note that although it was legal under English law to give the children of the same parents the same name, it was more common for two children with the same first name to have different mothers and the same father. There is, however, no indication of a second marriage, so both John Turner children likely share the same mother and father.
Humphrey immigrated with his family to Plymouth in 1633. He was a tanner by trade. He moved to the new town of Scituate and built a house before 1634, when he is listed as one of the nine householders in town. He was a founding member of the Scituate Church on January 8, 1634. By the way, for those of you who aren't in Massachusetts, Scituate is pronounced si-choo-it.
Humphrey Turner held many public offices in Scituate. He was the Deputy for Scituate to the General Court (legislature) at least thirteen times. He was on a Grand Jury at least three times, on a committee to divide land in Scituate, and appointed supervisor of highways twice. He also accumulated a good portion of land.
On October 1, 1668, Turner portioned out all of his lands except his home farm to his sons. His wife Lydia died in 1669.
Sometime between Nov. 1, 1672 and May 29, 1673, Humphrey Turner died. His will was proved on June 5, 1673, bequeathing his home farm to his eldest son John, his livestock to his son Nathaniel, his clothing, bed, and blankets to his son Thomas, and varying monetary amounts to his other sons, daughters, and grandchildren. His burial site is not known.
