- Matthew Beckwith - Early settler of Hartford and Lyme, Connecticut
Family Connection - 9th Great-grandfather of Roy Ellsworth Stricker
Matthew Beckwith was born on September 22, 1610 in Yorkshire, England. Not much is known about his early life, but he immigrated in 1636 to Connecticut. He married Mary Elizabeth Lynde in Hartford in 1637. They had seven children, Joseph, Mary, Matthew, Elizabeth, Sarah, Nathaniel, and John.
A land inventory for Matthew, probably from 1645, indicated he owned about 16 acres of land in Hartford. He sold all of his holdings in Hartford in March of 1650 in order to became one of the first settlers of the section of New London called Lyme. He purchased large parcels of land along the Niantic River.
Not much is know about him personally, but there are several references in court documents about drunkenness and disorderly behavior.
Matthew died Oct. 21, 1681 as a result of a fall down a ledge of rocks at night in what is now Rocky Neck State Park in Niantic. From Caulkins History of New London "His death being sudden and the result of an accident, a jury was summoned, who gave their verdict, That ' he came to his death by mistaking his way in a dark night, and falling from a clift of rocks'"
Matthew was buried in Duck River Cemetery, pictured above, in Old Lyme, CT.
