Robert Keayne - Immigrant, Tailor, Militia Captain, Legislator
Family Connection - 9th great-grandfather of Roy Stricker
Robert Keayne was born in 1595 in Windsor, England. He was apprenticed to John Heyfield of the Merchant Taylors Company in London to learn his trade. He married Ann Mansfield on June 18, 1617. They had four sons, but only Benjamin survived childhood. While there, he joined the Honorable Artillery Company of London, a militia (and social) group.
Robert, Ann, and Benjamin immigrated to Boston in 1635, sailing on the ship "Defence". Robert was admitted to First Church in 1636. First Church in Boston was a Puritan Church, what we now know as Congregationalist. Although they've had several locations and buildings over the years, First Church still exists as a Unitarian Universalist Congregation.
Robert opened a tailor shop on State Street. He and his family lived on the upper floors of the shop. At one point he was brought before the court for overcharging customers, but otherwise we don't know much about his business.
Robert was one of the founders and the first Captain of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in Boston that still exists today. They are the oldest chartered military organization in the Western Hemisphere. Their Charter was granted in March 1638 to be a volunteer militia which trains on a regular basis. Their purpose was to prepare members to be officers in enrolled militia companies. The original name of the organization was The Military Company - the new name was adopted sometime around 1690.
The third floor of Faneuil Hall is the current home of this organization.
Robert Keayne died in 1656 and is buried in King's Chapel Burial Ground.
