Stephen Hopkins was born in April, 1582 in Upper Clatford, Test Valley Borough, Hampshire, England.
Sometime before 1604, he married Mary Kent. They had three children:
Elizabeth b. 1604 d. after 1613, before 1620
Constance b. May 11, 1606 d. 1677

In 1609, Stephen went as a minister's clerk on the ship "Venture", voyaging to Jamestown, Virginia.
The ship wrecked near Barbados, and the passengers were stranded on an island for ten months. Eventually, they built a small ship and sailed to Jamestown. It is unknown how long he stayed in Jamestown, but he was there when his wife died in England in 1613.
Stephen was back in England by 1617 when he married Elizabeth Fisher. Their first child, Damaris, was born in 1618.
In 1620, Stephen, Elizabeth, Constance, Giles, and Damaris sailed on the Mayflower. Their son was born during the voyage and was named Oceanus. Once at Plymouth, five more children were born:
Oceanus b. 1620 d. 1621
Caleb b. 1624 d. btw 1644 and 1651

Elizabeth, b. 1632. d. 1659
Stephen was chosen by the Governor to be the colony's emissary to tribal leader Massasoit.
He was often cited by the authorities for his behavior - excessive drinking, allowing drinking on the Sabbath, overcharging for beer, selling goods at inflated prices.
Stephen Hopkins died sometime between early June and mid July 1644. His wife Elizabeth died sometime in the early 1640's, and he expressed his wish to be buried next to her. They were buried on Burial Hill in Plymouth.
