Rosemeyer Family Tree - Frederick Rosemeyer and Eleanor Schakel

Frederick Rosemeyer and Eleanore Schakel

Family Connection - Paternal Grandfather and Grandmother of Anna Elnora Rosemeyer

Frederick Rosemeyer is the son of Friederich and Eleanor Rosemeier, the subjects of my Oct. 8th blog.

Frederick was born in Germany on May 22, 1870, and immigrated with his parents in 1871 when he was 11 months old. His earlier years are included in his father's post, so I won't repeat them here.

Eleanore Schakel was born in Germany in Sept. 1873, and immigrated to the United States in 1891, apparently alone, at age 18. It is likely that she met Frederick at Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church. They were married on October 28, 1894.

The first official record of their family was in the 1900 Federal Census. At that time, they were living at 164 Woodlawn Street, Indianapolis.  Frederick is working as a railroad car inspector, and both Frederick and Eleanore are listed as naturalized citizens. They have two children:

        Lillian        b. 1896
        Frederick    b. 1898

By the 1910 census, they had moved to 559 Beville. Frederick is listed as a car repairer. They have several more children in addition to Lillian and Frederick:

        Helen         b. 1900
        Edna          b. 1903
        Walter        b. 1905
        Herbert      b. 1906
        Marie         b. 1908

In 1920, they were still living at the Beville address, and had one more child:

        Edwin        b. 1910

Lillian and Helen were no longer living with them. Fred, Edna, and Walter were out of school and working. Fred was a car builder like his father,  Edna is listed as a caster in a tailor shop (no, I don't know what that is), and Walter is listed as an apprentice baker at fourteen. Herbert, Marie, and Edwin were still in school.

By 1930, the family had moved to 164 DeQuincy Street. That year, the census included an inquiry about radio ownership - yes, the Rosemeyers owned a radio. Only Edna and Edwin were still living at home. Edna was a Telephone Operator, and Edwin was a Laundry Worker.

The family moved again between 1930 and 1940. In 1940, Fred and Eleanor were living with Edna an her two children Edna, age 2, and Eleanor, age 4, at 874 N. Gladstone. Edna is still a Telephone Operator and is listed as divorced. Frederick was no longer working in 1940.

We know a little outside of census records about how they lived their lives. Both Eleanor and Frederick were active members of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church. Eleanor was a member of Zion's Ladies Aid Society and Women's Guild. Fred was also a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Car Men.

Eleanor Schakel Rosemeyer died of a stroke complicated by dementia on September 12, 1944. She died one month before Eleanor and Frederick's 50th wedding anniversary.

When Frederick died on May 28, 1956, his obituary spoke of his great love of railroads. He worked for both the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central Railroad companies during his life. He was described as big and strong but gentle, and he loved to cook and bake. At the time of his death, all eight children were living, and he had 21 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

Frederick and Eleanor were buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Welcome!

Welcome to my genealogy blog! I'm just getting started, but I hope to share family trees, facts, and stories I've uncovered while researching my family and Dave's family. So, I will be posting family trees for the ancestors of Edward Elihu Hazen Jr.,  Ruth Ann Bradley, Roy Ellsworth Stricker, and Anna Elnora Rosemeyer,  My genealogy is a work in progress, and although I strive for accuracy, and have at least one (usually several) historical record to back up each name and relationship, I do make revisions from time to time. My goal for each branch is to trace direct ancestors at leas as far as the first immigrant to the U.S.  I'm new at blogging, so please be patient - I'm learning as I go. Again, welcome! Starla

Rosemeyer Family Tree - Friederick Rosemeyer and Eleanor Kolling

Friederich Rosemeyer  and Eleanor Kolling - Immigrants to Indianapolis Family Connection - great-grandfather and great-grandmother to Anna Rosemeyer Friederich Rosemeyer was born in Germany on Aug. 25, 1844.  I haven't found a marriage record (yet!) but in 1873, he immigrated to the U.S. with his wife Eleanor, age 31, daughter Christine, age 4, and son Friederich, age 11 months. They arrived in New York on September 19th. I assume they traveled by train to Indianapolis from New York City.  Why Indianapolis? We may never know for sure, but it is likely they came because they had connections to other members of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church (now Zion United  Church of Christ). Indianapolis had a large German immigrant community, and at Zion, they worshipped in German until at least 1928, when the first services in English occurred.  Friederich and Eleanor had six children:     Christina      1869-1875     Frederick  ...

Hazen Family Tree - Edward Hazen

Edward Hazen - Immigrant, Patriarch of Hazens in the U.S.  Family connection - seventh great-grandfather of Edward Elihu Hazen Jr.  Edward Hazen was born in Cadney, Lincolnshire, England on December 14, 1614. His father was Thomas Hassen (1580-1628). His mother was Elizabeth Mowry (1582-1630).  Edward immigrated to the town of Rowley, MA in 1647. The  town was established in 1639, so he was an early settler, but not an original one.  Edward married Elizabeth, surname unknown. She died on Sept. 18. 1649 and was buried in the Rowley Burial Ground. They had no children.  On Mar. 2, 1650, Edward married Hannah Grant, daughter of Thomas Grant and Jane Haburne. At least one source indicates that the Grant family immigrated to Rowley on the same ship as Edward.  Edward and Hannah had 11 children:          Elizabeth - b. 1651, Hannah - b. 1653, John - b. 1655, Thomas - b. 1657, Edward - b. 1660,         ...
