Grave of Lemuel Lakin - Pine Ridge Cemetery, Hancock, New Hampshire.
Lemuel Lakin was born on Feb. 26, 1761 in Groton, Massachusetts to parents William Lakin and Anna Gragg.
At the age of 16, Lemuel joined Capt. Peter Clark's company, Colonel Stickney's Regiment, General Stark's Brigade of the New Hampshire Militia. He served from July 21, 1777 to September 25, 1777, at Bennington, Vermont as a Private.
Sometime in about 1784, he married Hannah Morrison. They had eleven children:
Jacob Gragg b. 1785 d. 1852
Margaret b. 1788 d. 1879
Moses Morrison b. 1790 d. 1843
Rachel b. 1792 d. 1824
William b. 1795 d. 1798
Sarah b. 1796 d. 1846
Anna b. 1798 d. 1800
Harriet b. 1800 d. 1869
Lemuel b. 1802 d. 1883
Caroline b. 1804 d. 1867
Napoleon Bonaparte b. 1806 d. 1859
In 1796, Lemuel was appointed Constable of Hancock. In the book The History of Hancock, New Hampshire 1764-1889, the author refers to Lemuel as Captain Lakin, and I assume that is an honorary title given to him as Constable, although it might also indicate that Hancock continued to maintain a militia and Lemuel was an officer.
The book also mentions that Lemuel had a love of learning, a love of military history and tactics, and loved to spend time in Groton, Massachusetts. In fact, he was in Groton for the 1800 Census.
Lemuel died on May 4, 1829, and was buried in the Pine Ridge Cemetery in Hancock New Hampshire.
