Samuel Fuller - Mayflower Passenger and Surgeon
Family Connection - 8th great-grandfather of Edward Elihu Hazen, Jr.
Samuel Fuller was born on January 20, 1581 in Redenhall, Norfolk, England. He was trained as a surgeon.
His first wife was Alice Glascock, who died sometime before 1613.
In 1613, he married Agnes Carpenter, from Wrington, England. They were apparently living with the other puritans in exile in Leiden. They had two children who died before christening. One was buried in Leiden on June 29, 1615. Agnes died soon after her second child was born and was buried in Leiden on July 3, 1615.
In May 1617, he married Bridget Lee in Leiden. Bridget Fuller came over on the ship "Anne" in 1623.
They had the following children, born in Plymouth:
Mercy Fuller b. 1627 d. 1651
Samuel Fuller b. 1629 d. 1695
Mayflower Compact
Apparently Samuel Fuller traveled to other settlements in his role as surgeon. He visited Salem and consulted with Rev. Endicott about church organization and practices. He was well read as well - his will indicated he owned about thirty books, which would have been very unusual.
There was a smallpox epidemic in the Colonies in 1633. Samuel Fuller was called upon to provide treatment and comfort to many victims, but ultimately he was infected and died in late summer 1633. His wife Bridget died sometime after May 2, 1667.
Note: In the passenger list for the Mayflower, Samuel Fuller is listed along with his servant William Button. William Button died at sea.
