Albert and Amelia Beckman - A complicated history
Family Connections- Great-grandfather and great-grandmother of Anna Elnora Rosemeyer
Albert and Amelia Beckman immigrated from Germany in March 1872. Little is known (yet) about their parentage or history before that time. Although some family members indicate that Amelia's maiden name was Brewster, I have not yet found any textual evidence for that - I'm still looking. Albert was born in October 1845 in Germany. Amelia was born in 1849 in Germany.
Here's what is known - Albert was 26 and Amelia was 23 when they sailed on the ship "Ohio" from Bremen to Baltimore with children William, age 2, and Anna, age 9 months.
From the 1880 census, Albert and Amelia were living at 188 Daugherty St. in Indianapolis. There were three children living with them - Anna, age 10, Albert, Age 5, and Henry, Age 2. William died in 1877. Albert Sr. was working for the railroad, Anna and Albert were both attending school.
The census records for 1890 were destroyed by a fire and subsequent water damage, so the next time any record exists for Albert and Amelia is in 1900.
In 1900, Amelia is listed as a servant for a family named Schwartz at 214 Wisconsin St. Her marital status is listed as divorced. In the 1910 census, she is listed as a servant for widower Charlie Kiel and his son William, on State Avenue. Sometime before 1917, Amelia moved in with her daughter Anna and son-in-law Henry William Harmening at 1422 Kelley Street. Amelia died on Dec. 23,1920. Her funeral was held at the Kelley St. home on Dec. 27, and she was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis.
Albert married Caroline Mügge in 1892, and their son Edward was born in 1893. I do not know when the divorce between Albert and Amelia took place - I will make a request for that info from the Marion County records office. In 1900, Albert is listed with his new wife Caroline at 2117 Chestnut Street, with their son Edward, age 7.
In 1910, Albert was listed in the census as a laborer in a box factory. He was living with his wife Caroline and their son Edward, 16, at 2125 S. Talbot Street,
Albert died of pneumonia on Feb. 27, 1917, His funeral was at their home at 2125 N. Delaware Street, followed by a service at Immanuel Reformed Church, Indianapolis. The funeral and service were private, and he was buried at Crown Hill Cemetery on March 2, 1917.
