Henry Tewksbury was born on November 27, 1739 to parents John and Sarah (Davis) Tewksbury in Amesbury, Massachusetts. On April 28, 1764, he married Sarah Calfe in Amesbury. They had ten children.

Henry moved his family to Weare, Hillsboro County, New Hampshire sometime around 1772. He was a farmer.
On July 10, 1775, Henry enlisted as a private in Capt. Parker's Company in Col. Timothy Bedel's regiment, part of the Northern Division of the Continental Army under General Montgomery. They took part in the siege of St. John's Canada. He was discharged on Dec. 16. 1775, after 5 months and 7 days service.
On April 15, 1776, he re-entered in Capt. Gilman's company, part of Col. Pierce Long's regiment, apparently as an artilleryman. He mustered out on Aug. 7, 1776, but rejoined on December 17, 1776 and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. He was part of the forces that marched to defend Ft. Ticonderoga. He served until February 7, 1777. After his Revolutionary War service was complete, he returned to his farm in Weare.
Henry died following a fall from his horse on November 26, 1806 at his farm in Weare. He was buried in the Buxton-Philbrick Cemetery in what is now South Weare. His wife Sarah died on January 11, 1832, and was buried alongside her husband.
