In 1642, Tristram immigrated to Boston with his wife, his surviving children, his two sisters, and his mother. When a new settlement was begun at Pentucket, now Haverhill, he moved his family there. His name appears on a deed dated November 15, 1642 for the land sold to him by the local Native Americans.
In 1648, the family moved to Newbury, where he operated a ferry across the Merrimack River. His wife operated a tavern. In 1654 or 1655 he sold the tavern and the ferry and moved his family to Salisbury.
Tristram was the leader of a group of investors who purchased Nantucket Island from Thomas Mayhew on July 2, 1659. Thomas Mayhew had previously received the grant of the island from the Earl of Stirling.
Tristram and his family settled near the western end of the island of what is now called Trott's Hills. Soon after, he purchased the 1000-acre Tuckernuck Island at the western end of Nantucket.
