John Miner - Revolutionary War Veteran

Family Connection - 4th Great-grandfather of Roy Ellsworth Stricker

John Miner's Grave, North Royalton Cemetery North Royalton Ohio

John Miner was born on January 27, 1761 in Lyme, Connecticut, to parents Ezekiel Miner and Margaret Beckwith Miner.

At fifteen, he enlisted in the Connecticut Regiment lead by Colonel John Chester. He served multiple times in multiple regiments from 1776 through 1781. The official records indicate the time periods when he served and sometimes include the officers he served under, but the location and purpose of the service is not specified. I've done my best to deduce where he was serving from the available historical record.

From his service records, it is likely that he was present at the Battle of Long Island in Nov. 1776.

From August 15, 1777 to September 17, 1777, he served in Captain Nathan Hine's Company, 13th Connecticut Militia under Col. Benjamin Hinman. He served from August 15, 1777 to September 15, 1777, plus credit for two hundred miles travelled to and from Connecticut to New York. It is likely that he participated in the Battle of Staten Island during this enlistment.

From April 1778 to October 1778 he was with Captain Church's Company, most likely at the Battle of Monmouth.

From July 1780  to December 1780 he was with Captain Thomas Converse's Co. of the 7th Connecticut Regiment under Col. Swift, most likely as part of the "Connecticut Line" defending key positions around West Point and the Hudson Highlands.

On December 12, 1782, John married Phoebe Lydia Robbins in Lyme, Connecticut. They had nine children:
            Nathan        b. 1783    d. 1785
            John            b. 1784    d. 1881
            Lucretia      b. 1785    d. 1858
            Phebe          b. 1786    d. 1873
            Matilda       b. 1792    d. 1817
            Betsy           b. 1792    d. 1853
            Sally            b. 1794    d. 1875
            Joseph         b. 1796    d. 1849
            Lydia           b. 1804    d. 1804

John's wife Phoebe died just a few days after Lydia was born, and Lydia died soon after.

On July 14, 1804, John Married Rhoda Wood. They had ten children:
            Eliza           b. 1805    d. 1892
            Lura            b. 1807    d. 1882
            Lester          b. 1807    d. 1890
            Phebe          b. 1808    d. 1809
            Daniel         b. 1809    d. 1875
            Seldon        b. 1811     d. 1891
            John            b. 1813    d. 1863
            Isaac           b. 1815    d. 1862
            Rhoda         b. 1818    d. 1872
            Benjamin    b. 1821    d. 1851

John and his family lived in many places: Lyme, Windsor, and Granby in Connecticut, Rutland, Vermont,  Bloomfield, New York, and Royalton, Ohio.

John died on August 20, 1847 in Royalton, Ohio. His obituary was as follows:

The venerable John Miner died at Cleveland, on the 20th of August. He was formerly, says the Cleveland Plain Dealer, of Lyme, Conn. and resided in Royalton, in this county, since 1831. Inured to hardships and service in early youth, a soldier of Washington, hale and robust, a Whig in politics, the father of 22 children, he served his day and generation faithfully for the full term of 88 years, and on the 20th day of August, 1849, death struck his name from the now nearly blank roll of revolutionary pensioners. Honored be his memory.

Welcome!

Welcome to my genealogy blog! I'm just getting started, but I hope to share family trees, facts, and stories I've uncovered while researching my family and Dave's family. So, I will be posting family trees for the ancestors of Edward Elihu Hazen Jr.,  Ruth Ann Bradley, Roy Ellsworth Stricker, and Anna Elnora Rosemeyer,  My genealogy is a work in progress, and although I strive for accuracy, and have at least one (usually several) historical record to back up each name and relationship, I do make revisions from time to time. My goal for each branch is to trace direct ancestors at leas as far as the first immigrant to the U.S.  I'm new at blogging, so please be patient - I'm learning as I go. Again, welcome! Starla

Rosemeyer Family Tree - Friederick Rosemeyer and Eleanor Kolling

Friederich Rosemeyer  and Eleanor Kolling - Immigrants to Indianapolis Family Connection - great-grandfather and great-grandmother to Anna Rosemeyer Friederich Rosemeyer was born in Germany on Aug. 25, 1844.  I haven't found a marriage record (yet!) but in 1873, he immigrated to the U.S. with his wife Eleanor, age 31, daughter Christine, age 4, and son Friederich, age 11 months. They arrived in New York on September 19th. I assume they traveled by train to Indianapolis from New York City.  Why Indianapolis? We may never know for sure, but it is likely they came because they had connections to other members of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church (now Zion United  Church of Christ). Indianapolis had a large German immigrant community, and at Zion, they worshipped in German until at least 1928, when the first services in English occurred.  Friederich and Eleanor had six children:     Christina      1869-1875     Frederick  ...

Hazen Family Tree - Edward Hazen

Edward Hazen - Immigrant, Patriarch of Hazens in the U.S.  Family connection - seventh great-grandfather of Edward Elihu Hazen Jr.  Edward Hazen was born in Cadney, Lincolnshire, England on December 14, 1614. His father was Thomas Hassen (1580-1628). His mother was Elizabeth Mowry (1582-1630).  Edward immigrated to the town of Rowley, MA in 1647. The  town was established in 1639, so he was an early settler, but not an original one.  Edward married Elizabeth, surname unknown. She died on Sept. 18. 1649 and was buried in the Rowley Burial Ground. They had no children.  On Mar. 2, 1650, Edward married Hannah Grant, daughter of Thomas Grant and Jane Haburne. At least one source indicates that the Grant family immigrated to Rowley on the same ship as Edward.  Edward and Hannah had 11 children:          Elizabeth - b. 1651, Hannah - b. 1653, John - b. 1655, Thomas - b. 1657, Edward - b. 1660,         ...
