Founders of Windsor Memorial
Bigod Eggleston was born in February 1586, and baptized at All Saints Church, Settrington, Yorkshire on February 20, 1586. His parents were James Eggleston and Margaret Harker Eggleston, farmers.
Sometime before 1611, he married and moved to Norwich, England, where he appears in the local militia list. He married, and his son James was baptized in 1612. James died in 1613, In 1614 his daughter Mary was baptized. There are no further records of her. In about 1620, a second son was born, also named James. Sometime after the birth of James, his first wife died. There are no further records of Bigod until 1630.
In 1630, he appears on the Membership of the church in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Many believe he came over on the ship Mary and John along with the other original settlers of Dorchester, but there is no definitive record of that. He came over with his son James. Bigod applied for Freeman status in October 1630. He was named Freeman on May 18, 1631. In 1634, he married Mary Wall. They had at least eight children:
Samuel b. 1634 d. 1690
Mary b. 1636 d. unknown
Thomas b. 1638 d. 1697
Mercy b. 1641 d. 1657
Sarah b. 1643 d. 1713
Abigail b. 1648 d. 1689
Joseph b. 1651 d. unknown
Benjamin b. 1653 d. 1732
In 1635, the Rev. John Warham, pastor of the Dorchester church, led a large group of parishioners to found the town Windsor, the first English settlement in Connecticut. Bigod Eggleston and his family were part of this group. His initial grant of land was five parcels of land, including a house lot, plus eleven acres of meadow. Over time, he continued to purchase land, until he had accumulated a large holding.
The Windsor Historical Society lists Bigod Eggleston as a farmer and builder.
An interesting entry appears in the Windsor town records in 1668, when Bigod Eggleston was paid a bounty for four wolf pelts. In 1668, he would have been over eighty years old! At that time, he was also paid to clean the church and beat the drum to summon townspeople to meetings.
Bigod Eggleston died on September 1, 1674. In his will, he left 40 shillings to his son Joseph "should he come and demand a portion", 3 shillings each to James (from his first marriage), Samuel, Thomas, Mary, Sarah, and Abigail. The remainder of his estate, including his house and property, was bequeathed to his son Benjamin on the condition that he support Bigod's widow and pay his debts. His total estate was valued at 116 pounds, with debts of 39 pounds.
Bigod Eggleston's grave location is unknown, but he is memorialized along with the other original settlers on the Founders of Windsor Memorial on the Palisado Green across from the Palisado Cemetery.
