Map of Current-day Barnstable
Historic Map of Barnstable, about 100 years after Thomas Lombard's death
Thomas Lombard was born in Thorncombe, Dorsetshire, England, in January 1581. The exact date of birth is unknown, but he was baptized on February 2, 1581. Little is known of his early life. He married four times, and had at least ten children. The names of his wives are the subject of discussion in the world of genealogy, but the fourth wife has been identified as Joyce (maiden name unknown) Wallen, widow of Ralph Wallen of Plymouth. Thomas and Joyce were married sometime around 1644.
Children by his first wife, who died between 1608 and 1617:
Thomas b. 1602 d. before 1617

Jedediah b. 1640 d. unknown

Thomas, Bernard, Thomas, Joshua, and Margaret were born in Thorncombe. Caleb, Jemima, and Jobaniah were born in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Jedediah and Benjamin were born in Barnstable, Massachusetts.
Thomas and his children came to Massachusetts on the Mary and John, landing in Dorchester in 1630. He applied for Freemanship on October 19, 1630, and was admitted as Freeman on May 18, 1631. He was an Innkeeper by trade.
By 1639, he and his family were among the first settlers in Barnstable, Massachusetts. On December 3, 1639, he was "allowed to keepe Victualling, or an ordinary, for entertainement of passengers, and to draw wyne at Barnstable". In other words, he could open an Inn (an ordinary) and serve wine to guests.
One other note comes from the court records of that time. Thomas complained to the court on October 2, 1660, that " Jedediah, his son, hath carried stubbornly against his said father, and that he is by him freed, provided he do dispose himself in some honest family with his and his father's consent, which if he shall neglect to do, the Court have deputed Mr. Hinckley to dispose of him to some honest, godly family, with his and his father's consent. Some reconciliation must have taken place, since Jedediah was bequeathed property in Thomas' will.
Thomas died sometime between completion of his will on June 10, 1663, and the inventory after his death taken on February 8, 1664. His grave location is unmarked and unknown, but it is most likely in Lothrop Hill Cemetery in Barnstable.

Note: There is a heated discussion about the surname of this family. It is sometimes spelled Lumbert,
Lumbart, Lombart, and Lombard. The most recent and definitive reference work "The Great Migration Begins - Immigrants to New England 1620-1633" by Robert Charles Anderson and published by the New England Historic Genealogical Society uses the name Lombard, so that's what I have done. If you have hard copy charts, the name is listed as Lumbert, but I have corrected all Lumbert to Lombard.
Thomas Lombard is on chart S-A1.
