Garrett Haddon, Tailor
8th Great-grandfather of Ruth Ann Bradley
Amesbury Founder's Memorial
Garrett Haddon (also called Jarrett Haddon) was born sometime around 1605 in England. He came to Boston on the ship "Confidence" on June 12, 1630. He was the 96th member admitted to the church in Boston in late 1630 or early 1631. In 1632, he moved to Cambridge. He was made Freeman on May 14, 1634. Some genealogists have suggested that he, like many others, indentured himself to pay for his passage. That would also explain the delay in granting Freemanship. He was a tailor and a planter (farmer) by trade.
On August 4, 1634, he was granted acreage in the town of Cambridge. By the time of the 1635 Cambridge Land Inventory, he had accumulated eight acres of land in three parcels, including a house.
In about 1637, he married Margaret, maiden name unknown. It is unknown how many children they had, but two daughters survived to adulthood:
Mary b. 1637 d. 1691
Sarah b. 1639 d. unknown, but she was living when Garret wrote his will in 1670
By 1640, Garrett and his family moved to Salisbury, Massachusetts. The church in Boston records their transfer to the "Church and CoulChester" (Salisbury) on October 11, 1640.
In 1654, a new settlement, called Salisbury New Town, was chartered by the "Articles of Agreement 1654". Garrett Haddon and his family became part of the original settlers of Salisbury New Town, later called Amesbury.
Garrett served on several juries during his time in Amesbury. There are also multiple Amesbury town records of his purchases and sales of land.
Margaret Haddon died in 1672. On January 20, 1686, Garrett wrote his will. It was proved on March 20, 1689, so his death can be dated to a few days before. In his will, he distributed his land and personal belongings to his daughters, one of his sons-in-law, and his grandchildren. His estate was valued at £181, including £165 in real estate.
His burial is assumed to be in the Golgotha Burying Grounds in Amesbury, but the only marker is the memorial stone shown above listing Haddon as one of the founders of Amesbury.
