James Hosmer, Early settler of Concord
Family Connection - 8th Great-grandfather of Ruth Ann Bradley
James Hosmer was born in Hawkhurst, Kent, England in 1605. He was baptized on December 8, 1605, son of Stephen Hosmer and his wife Dorothy Seldon Hosmer.
By 1633, he married Ann, maiden name unknown. They had two children:
Mary b. 1633 d. exact date unknown, but soon after 1635
Ann b. 1635 d. exact date unknown, but soon after 1635
James, Ann, children Mary and Ann, and two maidservants came to Massachusetts on the ship Elizabeth, departing England on April 9, 1635. They settled in the town of Cambridge. Since no further records of his wife Ann appear, it is likely that she died onboard ship or shortly after. The daughters Mary and Ann also have no other records.
James was granted two acres of land in Cambridge. He sold that land to Edward Winship prior to the move to Concord.
James moved to the new town of Concord, Massachusetts in 1637. He was admitted to the church in Concord and made Freeman on May 17, 1637. His "town" allotment is shown in the map below, on the far right. He would also have crop and pasture fields outside of the town center.
James married Mary, maiden name unknown, in 1637. They had two children:
James b. 1637 d. 1676
Mary b. 1639 d. 1642
James was likely born in Cambridge. Mary was born in Concord.
James' second wife, Mary died in Concord on May 11, 1641.
Sometime before 1642, James married Alice, maiden name unknown. They had three children:
Stephen b. 1642 d. 1714
Hannah b. 1644 d. 1675
Mary b. 1646 d. 1719
Alice died on March 3, 1664.
James was a clothier in England, but was likely a yeoman farmer in Cambridge and Concord. He was on a committee to lay out grants of farmland and was a selectman (town councilman) in Concord.
On March 1, 1683, he transferred ownership of his "housing, land, and moveable estate" in Concord to his son Stephen in return for "maintenance" - housing, food, and whatever care he needed as he aged. Stephen was his only surviving son. He also granted cash gifts to his daughter Mary and her family, and to the children of his deceased children Stephen and Hannah.
James Hosmer died on February 7, 1685. No burial details are available for James, his wives, or the children who predeceased him.
