William Hedge served in the Pequot War, but no details are available. The war was waged mostly in Connecticut between 1636 and 1638.
William is listed in the history of Yarmouth as one of the "first comers". He was named Constable for Yarmouth in 1650. He served on juries at least three times, was on a committee to lay out a highway from Sandwich to Plymouth in 1652. In Yarmouth, he was named Ensign of the town militia, then named Captain in 1659 and again in 1662.
He appears several times in court records. He was fined for not fencing his pigs, for allowing an Indian to have a gun, powder, and shot, and selling "wine and strong waters " without a license. He imported liquor and ammunition into Yarmouth several times, including one instance when he brought in fifteen gallons of liquor, ten pounds of powder, and fifty pounds of lead.
In one memorable town record, William and another man broke into a house in Eastham, found and drank all the liquor in the house, then wrote "libelous and scandalous verses" and left them on the table for the homeowner to find.
William Hedge died sometime between June 30, 1670, when he wrote his will, and July 5, 1670, when the court asked for the will. The inventory of his estate taken on July 15, 1670, indicated a total worth of £487, none of which was real estate. His burial site is unmarked and unknown.
