Henry Kimball - Early settler of Watertown

Henry Kimball was born in about 1590 in Essex, England to father Richard Kimball. Henry was the brother of Richard Kimball, the subject of the Nov. 25, 2025 blog post. 

Memorial to the Early Settlers of Watertown

On November 27, 1628, Henry married Susan Stone, widow of Richard Cutting. They had three children:

                John                b. 1637        d. 1714

Elizabeth and Susan were born in Mistly, Essex, England. John was born in Watertown, Massachusetts. 

Henry, Susan, and their children Elizabeth and Susan, plus Henry's wife's child by her first marriage, Richard Cutting, came to Massachusetts on the ship Elizabeth in 1634. Henry's brother Richard and his family were also passengers on the Elizabeth. 

Henry and his family settled in the town of Watertown upon their arrival. Watertown was one of the first four settlements in Massachusetts, established in 1630. Henry was admitted to the Watertown church, and was named Freeman on May 2, 1638. He was granted over 150 acres of land. His father and brother were wheelwrights, but Henry was a farmer. 

Henry Kimball died sometime before July 22, 1648, when an inventory of his estate was made. He was buried in the Old Burying Place in Watertown, but no marker exists. 

His widow Susan married Thomas Low soon after Henry's death. She died in August 1684 at the age of 89.

No record of a will for Henry Kimball was recorded. When his son turned fourteen in 1651, he chose John Shearman as his guardian. In that same court proceeding, the spouses of Elizabeth and Susan both indicated that they had received the portions due to their wives from Henry Kimball's estate.
