Robert Goodale, Salem Planter
Family connection - 7th great-grandfather of Edward Elihu Hazen, Jr.
Robert Goodale was born in England in about 1604. He married Katherine, surname unknown, by 1630. They had seven children:
Mary b. 1630 d. 1668
Abraham b. 1632 d. after 1634
Isaac b. 1633 d. 1679
Elizabeth b. 1636 d. 1706
Sarah b. 1638 d. 1730
Zachariah b. 1640 d. 1715
Jacob b. 1641 d. 1676
Hannah b. 1645 d. 1716
Mary, Abraham, and Isaac were born in England, and the others were born in Salem.
Robert, Katherine, and the three oldest children migrated on the ship Elizabeth in 1634. They settled in Salem. Robert was a planter - a farmer who grows crops. In 1636, he was granted twenty acres of land in a list of land grants to non-freemen. In 1638, he was granted an additional 20 acres. In 1652, town records indicate that by that time, Robert had purchased additional land, totaling 480 acres.
It is unusual that Robert never appears in any lists of church members or Freemen, and he never served on a town committee, held town office, or served on a jury. Apparently he chose not to join the church, and that meant he would never be named Freeman, and could not hold office.
He did, however, appear in court records. In December 1642, he was one of twelve men fined for putting their cattle in the common corn fields. He was fined in 1644 for allowing his goat into a neighbor's cornfield. In 1644, he was accused of stealing four goats, one old and three young. When caught, he promised to return them, but when the owner went to retrieve them, Goodale said he killed one and the rest were lost, so the case was dismissed from court for lack of evidence.
Robert's wife Katherine died in 1666. In August 1669, Robert married Margaret Lazenby. At the time of the marriage, he promised that if she survived him , she would have the new house he was about to build, two cows and a horse, his orchard at Bald Hill and twelve acres of land. If she predeceased him, this property would go to his son Jacob.
Robert Goodale died sometime between October 12, 1682, when he made his will, and March 10, 1683, when the inventory of his property was completed. In February, 1684, his wife Margaret sold the orchard and land Robert granted her to the town of Salem in exchange for ongoing financial support. His wife Margaret received support from the town from 1683 until 1689. She died and was buried on March 25, 1689.
The burial sites for Robert, Katherine, and Margaret are unknown, but the earliest burying ground called The Burial Point, shown above, is most likely.
