Roger Chandler, Sayworker
Family Connection - 10th great-grandfather of Roy Ellsworth Stricker
Roger Chandler was born in 1586 and was baptized on May 22, 1586 in Little Bromley, Essex, England. At some unknown date, he joined the other Puritan separatists in Leiden, Netherlands. He married Isabella Chilton there on July 21, 1615. Isabella Chilton was the daughter of Mayflower passenger James Chilton and his wife, who both died shortly after the Mayflower arrived in Plymouth in 1621. Roger and Isabella had four children:
Samuel b. bef. Oct. 1622 d. 1622
Sarah b. bef. 1622 d. 1675
Mary b. 1624 d. 1658
Martha b. 1628 d. 1674
Roger, Isabella, and their three daughters came to Plymouth form Leiden in 1632. Roger was named Freeman in 1633. He was a Sayworker - essentially a worker for hire.
In 1640, Roger was granted twenty-five acres in Duxbury. The town of Duxbury split from the town of Plymouth in 1637. He sold that land in 1644, but apparently remained in Duxbury. Roger's actual date of death is unknown, but it was sometime between May 5, 1646, when he appears in court records about a dispute, and October 1665. In October 1665, one hundred fifty acres were granted to "the three sisters, the daughters of Roger Chandler, deceased, to each of them fifty acres". Roger's wife, Isabella, does not appear in any records after her arrival, so it is not known when she died. Burial locations for Roger and Isabella are not known.
