Jacob b. 1628 d. 1693
Hannah b. 1634 d. 1700
Sarah b. 1636 d. 1662
John b. 1639 d. before1673
Jacob, Anna, and young Jacob migrated to Salem, Massachusetts in 1633.
Jacob was a tailor. He and his wife joined the Salem church upon arrival. Jacob was named Freeman on May 14, 1634. He was granted fifty acres of land in Salem in 1636. He continued to add to his land holdings throughout his lifetime.
Jacob served as Salem's Deputy to General Court (legislature) four times. He served on Essex County juries five times, Essex Grand Jury sixteen times, and Essex Petit Jury twelve times. He served three terms as Salem Selectman (town council), was collector of tithes, highway surveyor, and served on multiple town committees. On November 10, 1668, Jacob was chosen to serve as Constable, but he refused and was fined. The fine was remitted when Jacob's son Jacob agreed to serve as Constable instead.
Jacob Barney was a member of the General Court in 1647, when a petition to ask for tolerance to Presbyterians, Anglicans, and others who were not members of the Congregational Church. The petition was denied, with Jacob Barney the only member who disagreed with the denial.
Jacob died without a will on April 28, 1673. An inventory of his property was taken on June 2, 1673. Jacob's estate was valued at £655, including £462 of real estate.
The situation was complicated - Anna had died on a previous unknown date, and Jacob had married Elizabeth Catesby. Jacob's son Jacob and daughter Hannah were the only surviving children. Sarah died in 1662, leaving a husband, John Grover, one son, and two daughters. Son John Barney died sometime prior to 1673, but his death date is not known.
The Court appointed the widow Elizabeth and the son Jacob to distribute the estate. All the surviving heirs agreed to the plan on June 28, 1673. The widow was to receive a provision, and the remaining lands and buildings were to go to Jacob Barney, except for one parcel given to John Cromwell, husband of daughter Hannah Barney. The agreement included the provision that since daughter Sarah, married to John Grover, had died, leaving a son and three daughters, that the children's uncles, Jacob Barney and John Cromwell would provide for them.
