John Walker - Follower of Anne Hutchinson
Family Connection - 9th Great-grandfather of Ruth Ann Bradley
John Walker was born in 1605 in Essex, England. In about 1628, he married Katherine, surname unknown. They had two children:
Sarah b. 1628 in England d: 1707
Mary b. 1634 in Roxbury d. 1717
John, Katherine, and Sarah migrated to Massachusetts in 1633 and settled in Roxbury. John and Katherine were admitted to the church in Roxbury. John was named Freeman on May 14, 1634.
In 1637, John and his family moved to Boston. By November 20, 1637, John was on a list of men who were "disarmed" - guns taken away - because they were known followers of Anne Hutchinson, a noted theologian. Her views were viewed heresy by the established church, and her followers were considered to be a danger to society.
On March 7, 1638, a group of men met at the home of William Coddington. They wrote and signed a "Compact" - a document indicating their intent to form a Christian-based government according to their beliefs outside of Massachusetts. John Walker was part of the group who drafted and signed this compact.
Roger Williams assisted this group in negotiating with the native peoples to purchase land in what is now Rhode Island. This settlement became the town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
On February 10, 1639, John Walker was granted one hundred acres of land in the new town. He was a member of the Portsmouth Town Council in 1639, and served on a jury in 1640.
In March of 1647, John wrote his will. In it, he gave twenty acres of land to each of his daughters. He specified that Sarah's portion would go to her children at her death, but to her husband if she died childless. Mary's portion was to be granted to her at her marriage or on her twentieth birthday if not married earlier.
John Walker died sometime after March 1647, but the exact date is not known. Katherine died sometime between March 1647 and April 1654. In 1656, fifty acres of land were granted by the town to William Earle (Mary's husband) and James Sands (Sarah's husband) as the land was originally granted to John Walker.
The burial locations for John and Katherine are unknown.
