John Hawkes, Founder of Windsor, Connecticut
Hazen Family Connection - 7th Great-grandfather of Edward Elihu Hazen, Jr.
John Hawkes was born in England in 1613. In 1634, he migrated to Massachusetts, settling in Dorchester. He was admitted to the Dorchester church, and was named Freeman on September 3, 1634. John was one of the 60 or so Dorchester church members who left in 1635 to found the new town of Windsor, Connecticut.
John married Elizabeth Brown in 1643. They had ten children, all born in Windsor:

John Hawkes served at least once on a jury, and was appointed Tax Collector for Windsor on February 6, 1649.
By 1660, John and his family moved to Hadley, Massachusetts. In late June 1662, John died, and was buried in the Old Hadley Cemetery in Hadley on June 30, 1662. He died without making a will, and all of his children were under the age of 21, the age of legal majority.
The Court of Northampton degreed on March 31, 1663, his estate was settled with an agreement between his wife and the court. The oldest son, John, received one third of the family land (excluding the family house) when he turned 22. Gershom and Eleazer received £20 each when they reached the age of twenty-one, and Elizabeth received £20 when she married. Anna, Joanna, Mary, and Sarah each received £15 when they reached the age of twenty-one.
John's wife Elizabeth married Robert Hinsdale in 1669. He died in 1675. She married Thomas Dibble in 1683. Elizabeth died in Windsor on September 29, 1685.
