William Moody was born in England in about 1608. In 1633, he married Sarah, surname unknown. They had three children:
Joshua b. 1632 d. 1697
Samuel b. abt. 1634 d. 1675
Caleb b. 1637 d. 1698
William, Sarah, Joshua, and perhaps Samuel came to Massachusetts in 1634 on the ship Mary and John and settled briefly in Ipswich. The year of Samuel's birth is deduced from other data, so it is not clear if he was born in England or Massachusetts.
William was admitted to the church in Ipswich in 1634, and was named Freeman on May 6, 1635.
William was one of the original founders of the town of Newbury in 1635. He was a saddler by trade, but apparently also shoed horses. One of his descendants stated that William was the first in the colonies to shoe oxen.
He served on grand juries four times. He was also licensed to "sell liquor to Indians". By 1673, he had accumulated about 92 acres of land in Newbury.
Sarah Moody died on January 13, 1673. On June 30, 1673, William Moody deeded about half of his land to his son Caleb. On September 8, 1673. William deeded the rest of his land, his house and barn, and all other property and household goods to his son Samuel. Note that William's oldest son, Joshua, graduated from Harvard in 1653, and was an ordained minister in New Hampshire and Boston, which likely explains why no property was received by Joshua from his father.
William Moody died in Newbury on October 25, 1673. He and his wife Sarah were buried in the Newbury Neck Cemetery, but no grave markers exist.
