John Greenway - Millwright in Dorchester, Massachusetts
Family Connection - 9th great-grandfather of Ruth Ann Bradley
John Greenway was born in about 1576 in England. There is some uncertainty about whether he had two wives or one - there are records of a wife named Mary, surname unknown, but the marriage date is unknown, and it is not clear if she is the mother of all six of his children or just the last two, considering the gap in birth dates.
Children:
Ann b. 1601 d. 1695
Ursula b. 1603 d. 1683
Mary b. 1606 d. 1682
Elizabeth b. 1612 d. after 1685
Susannah b. 1620 d. 1662
Katherine b. 1626 d. 1680
In 1630, John, Mary, and their daughters migrated to Massachusetts, possibly on the ship Mary & John or one of the other ships in that fleet.
They settled in Dorchester. John was a member of the First Church, Dorchester, until 1636, when he and Mary were the tenth man and woman to join the Second Church, Dorchester. John was named Freeman on May 18, 1631.
John was a millwright by trade - someone who makes the machinery needed for grain mills and sawmills.
He was a Fenceviewer for Dorchester three times between 1633 and 1645. In 1638, he was "lotlayer" - the person responsible for laying out new lots in town.
In 1650, John documented his wishes for his estate. He granted his house, houselot, furnishings, and about seventeen acres, plus his share of the commons "on this north side of the Naponsett River" to his daughter Ursula, who was unmarried and living with John and Mary. He also stipulated what would happen to Ursula's inheritance if she died without children - her share would go to her sister Mary's husband. Ursula married sometime between her father's death, when she was 47 years old, and 1659, when she was referred to as "Ursula Batten, wife of Hugh".
John also granted his land south of the Naponsett River to his daughter Katherine's husband, William Daniels. He granted land he owned on the Pine Neck area of Dorchester to Robert Pearse, the husband of John's daughter Ann.
John Greenway died between February 5, 1651 and May 6, 1652. His wife Mary Greenaway died on January 23, 1659. John and Mary were buried in the Dorchester North Burying Place, but no marker exists.
